St Ives

"Though I sang in my chains like the sea.” Dylan Thomas.

Allan Storer has exhibited with Art House Gallery, Island Square, St Ives since 2005, developing a long-standing connection to the town’s unique light and artistic heritage.

These St Ives paintings are rooted in direct experience of the Atlantic — shaped by time spent in the water as both surfer and swimmer. The work responds to the sea’s physical force: breaking waves, shifting currents and the constant movement of light across the surface.

At other times, particularly in the early evening, the sea becomes quieter and more reflective. Movement slows, colour softens, and a different atmosphere emerges — one of stillness, balance and quiet intensity.

The paintings move between these states, exploring the Cornish coast not as description, but as sensation — where paint carries both energy and calm within the same surface.

Working in oil, the emphasis is on material, light and rhythm — creating contemporary seascape paintings that reflect the changing character of St Ives and the wider Cornwall coastline.
